Jio - How to leave competitors suffocated and stuck

When companies like Airtel, Idea! & Vodafone were having a full-blown price war on voice calls, Jio was playing the quiet game.

When the aforementioned companies were charging low fees for calls, they gave lesser thought to mobile data.
Jio went all-in with new technologies and almost forced its competitors out of business. Jio understood that, in an already saturated market, the most growth for the market was: DATA.
There is never an equal amount of growth in various segments of businesses.
Jio did not need to invest in the costs of 3G’s and 2G’s as Jio was a late entry, through fiber optic cabling.
Through the addition of the new technology, Jio’s mobile data speed was at least 10-15 times faster than Jio’s competitors.
Jio entered the market providing free calls, free SMS, and free-roaming while charging surprisingly less for data as well.
Jio kept a very aggressive strategy from the start.
When there was a high cost of capital, expensive technology, strong government regulations, there was a very strong exit barrier created by Jio when it entered the telecom industry.

Through a strategy known as loss leading, Jio captured a large position of the market share while adding an entry barrier as well.
  • What happened was Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea!, when they needed to compete with Jio, it was tough for them to exit the current state of things and upgrade their technology.

But even if they did not come out, they had to sell their products at an even lower price than Jio, forming an entry barrier.

Thus, Jio’s competition could neither exit their current market nor enter a new market. They were suffocated and stuck.

It was a huge win for consumers of the telecom industry.
Through another strategy called the razor & blade pricing strategy, they dumped 4G sims from Jio for free with an aadhar card.

Jio charged zero cash for the sim while charging for the high use of a complementary product: Data.

Through continuous improvement, Jio is consistently sharping their axe to consistently suffer striking blows to their competitors.

Recently, Jio’s future prospects look bright. Google is acquiring a 7.7% stake in Jio. Additionally, 5G solutions are being put forth.

Jio has partnered up with Whatsapp and other social platforms and is looking to dominate India’s eCommerce market.

2020.09.18 22:19 EnflamedPhoenix Airtel XStream Fibre 3-day review

I got the Xstream FIbre connection on 16th Septmber, and well, the experience so far has been MIND-BLOWING!! But there are still some issues to be ironed out and it is clear that it's still in rollout phase.
Getting a connection and installation :
First of all, the fibre network is still rolling out, but the people at the Airtel store in Kankarbagh said that they have covered a major portion of the city till now. I do know for sure that it's not yet in Patna city and that it will probably take 3 more months to reach there. But for other areas, I don't have any idea.
Applying for a connection is easy. Just contact this number (+918804048805) via whatsapp (his name is Ravi) and then he will guide you through the process. You can also contact that number to know whether the service is available in your area or not.
The installation process was, however, not so smooth for me. To the best of my knowledge, Airtel has partnered with an LCO and it's the guys from that company who are doing all the installation. They came around 10 AM, extended the fibre to my apartment, and then had to leave because the line had snapped in some area. They came back agin around 4:30 PM, got it properly set up and then left saying that some other people will come and install the router. Those guys came around 6 PM, and it was only then that the connection started working. The entire process from extending the fibre to activating the connection would have taken a total of 35 minutes, but due to all this mess, it almost took the whole day. Probably because it's just the starting phase of the rollout.
And also, the router they have provided is a Huawei one in my case. It's 2.5 + 5 GHz router so there's no issue regarding the frequency bandwidth. Even if you have a router of your own, you will still be charged the same 1000 Rs for installation, so I will say get the new router.
Regarding the unlimited calls facility, Airtel has provided a landline number, but weirdly enough they have not provided any landline for using it. I will contact the store and update about what happened.
Speed and network quality:
This is where Airtel Fibre completely blew my mind away. Just look at these speedtests yourself. Keep in mind that I have subscribed to the 799 Rs per month plan (paying for three months upfront) with speeds upto 100 Mbps.
Opeenspeedtest results : 18th September 17th September 16th September
Speedtest results : September 19th 01:30 September 16th, 18:44
It will take about 10 minutes from the moment the connection gets activated for speeds to reach their true potential. But after that, it's just utterly unbelievable how fast this works. I mean I opened 3 4K videos on my laptop and they all streamed without buffering.
The ping however is a little bit problematic if you are a serious online gamer. So far it has fluctuated between 30 ms to 120 ms. Also, weirdly enough it seems Airtel is throttling Netflix to some extent. I mean in all other speedtests I am getting 110-150 Mbps speeds, but on fast.com (owned by Netflix), the best I have been able to get so far is 50 Mbps. There wont' be any quality issues in streaming from Netflix, I have checked that, but just keep in mind there is some throttling probably. Otherwise the network connection is perfect. There has been zero downtime till now, and the speeds have always been over 105 Mbps whenever I checked.
Issues:
So far I have had three complaints:
  1. The installation process was not smooth for me. Most of it was due to pure bad luck, but they should make it so that the guys who install the fibre connection are also the ones who will install the router.
  2. Lack of clarity regarding the landline issue.
  3. For some reason, Airtel Xstream app shows that I am roaming and refuses to connect via the Airtel Network. I will have to contact the store or the Airtel Twitter account for this.
Conclusion:
If the connection is available in your area, then definitely go for it. Yeah Jio's plans cost less by some amount, but I have always have had better experience with Airtel and who knows when Jio will rollout here. The people at the Jio store said it will launch in around 1.5 months but let's see.

2020.09.08 04:27 WannabeStonks69 CIEN DD

CIEN DD
Ciena Due Diligence

Tl;dr CIEN is a relatively undervalued communications company that should see tremendous growth in the next few years.
Ciena provides telecom hardware and NaaS or networks as a service to multiple large network providers including AT&T and Verizon. They provide hardware through their converged packet optical solutions such as their Waveservers which give datacenters high-bandwidth connections for single span, metro, long haul, and subsea connections. These devices constantly generate more return on assets for Ciena compared to their primary competitor, Juniper (JNPR) at 7.4% ROA against JNPR’s 4% ROA. Other hardware/optical solutions from Ciena are created with the goal of “scaling capacity, increase transmission speeds, allocate traffic and adapt dynamically”, and most of these goals are met uniquely by the products they provide, their Waveservers have great adaptability with the physical product itself being easy to install and stackable plus a provided suite of software management interfaces and APIs for ease of use. Ciena’s Blue Planet AI gives network providers (like Verizon) data analytics to help them optimize their networks, but they also have bandwidth on demand, which basically helps companies that provide on demand services provide them faster and more efficiently, with the AI automating bandwidth usage to reduce fulfillment costs by up to 90% against static services. This along with network virtualization rounds out Ciena’s network pitch, which also has a nice tie-in with making cloud-based services, streaming, and cellular traffic more network-efficient. More specifically, things like edge-based computing (VAcloud gaming), ML, Ultra-HD video, and 5G cell networks are going to become much more efficient if companies dealing in these products use Ciena’s services. So as you can see Ciena has a diversified customer base, they’re not just a networking and telecom solutions company, they provide so much more in terms of value creation for web-scale companies. The best thing about Ciena is that even though it’s a modern tech company, it’s still asset intensive, which means that there’s a far lower chance one will just find a substitute for it. Many of the other tech companies I’ve looked into only have services as their niche and lack any real assets to back them up. Verizon, AT&T and CenturyLink are huge customers of Ciena’s and make up greater than 20% of their total revenue. This is a good sign in the sense that Ciena has huge customers that’ll constantly require their services and it’s also not necessarily good because a large portion of their total revenues also rely on the fact that these companies won’t just acquire another company that can develop similar services in-house for a lower cost. Thankfully, Ciena has lots of development going on the web-scale side anyway: “Sales to Web-scale provider customers, representing approximately 22% of total revenue and growing over 40% year-over-year, were an important contributor to our annual revenue growth”, so their consumer base should be further diversified in the near future. Ciena is also planning on expanding into foreign markets, but their first two foreign countries will be Canada and India (arguably the country with most potential for private infiltration into telecom and 5G networks considering the amount of cloud-based companies that operate from there) and they will provide converged packet optical services to Airtel, Jio (Facebook recently partnered with them), and Vodafone, the biggest cellular connectivity providers in India, which has really helped their bottom line: “After recent years of strong growth driven by aggressive network build outs by service providers in India, capital spending in this region decreased year-over-year. We believe our business and financial performance in recent years highlights the benefits of our diverse global business and our ability to target high growth segments within our markets.”
The management team believes that this is what they’ll be targeting in terms of the market opportunity they’re taking on: “The business models of many network operators are under pressure to constrain their capital expenditure budgets, as they cannot grow their network spending at the rate of bandwidth growth. To address these growing service demands and better manage network cost, many network operators are looking to adopt next-generation infrastructures that are more programmable and better capable of leveraging data for network insight, analytics and automation.”
Ciena’s price recently tanked a lot due to them throwing caution to the wind that COVID would certainly cause challenges despite the recently strong growth for them earnings-wise, but the first line of the last 8k was the following: "We delivered outstanding financial results in the third quarter, reflecting our continued innovation, market leadership and strong competitive position in an uncertain macro environment,“ said Gary Smith, President and CEO, Ciena. “Although COVID-related market dynamics have resulted in an order slowdown and are likely to adversely impact our revenue for a few quarters, we are confident in our ability to continue executing on our strategy and expanding our market leadership."
I’m not sure why the market then reacted with a 25% dump in stock prices, because I highly doubt earnings will even suffer by much. I believe that these days just being conservative with your opening remarks is enough to scare investors into selling, especially during a volatile market like this. But fear not because Ciena has a beta of 0.80 and average target price of $57.47, so buy the dip. It’s only because of the tech slowdown compounded with neutral guidance that CIEN slumped, there’s not going to be much more room for going down so buy before a new bullish trend begins.
Now let’s jump into the financials (just remember that Ciena has had several acquisitions throughout the years), where I think Ciena really stands out, or at least shows to be competent in terms of money management:
Ciena has had consistently growing gross profits from both products and services for the past three years.

Decreasing liabilities and increasing cash reserves are always a great sign

Consistently increasing free cash flow
Increasing return on invested capital (ROIC)

Increasing operating margins
decreasing days for cash conversion

Decreasing SG&A expenses/per $ of Profit

https://preview.redd.it/vc4jxdbn2ul51.png?width=628&format=png&auto=webp&s=4783b7c88ba3425af1a89bb6807d2b81ad0ad477
Ciena still has a lot of room to reduce operating expenses however, and that’s a sign of either a company in a heavily competitive environment or a company which has yet to develop. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from the investment books that I’ve read, it’s that your returns will be better when you invest in a company whose competitive advantage has yet to fully develop, rather than investing in a company with huge net profit margins and low opex (this usually means the company is already established).

Total liabilities decreased between 2018 and 2019, always a good sign

Huge jump in operating cash flows from 2018-19

https://preview.redd.it/uxa48ewu2ul51.png?width=477&format=png&auto=webp&s=c7bc890974a0921bebf0a8443da23d015e7e1d57

Increasing cash *reserves* as well

https://preview.redd.it/a9gj1oaz2ul51.png?width=659&format=png&auto=webp&s=25c99c1b236bf8ad1ceaa5bb4fe488950ba739ab

Because of the recent dump in the stock price, Ciena is at a perfect buy-in point now, and it’s only up 3.5% YTD because of it. Increasing margins and overall returns make this a prime candidate to sustain a recession and advance to higher highs when the full potential of this company is realized. With tremendous web-scale growth and a unique AI enterprise product, this company sets itself apart in the telecom arena and has tons of growth potential outside of and inside of the telecom sector. Ciena has no other competitors of its size (which is relatively small with only a 7B market cap, just showing you how much growth potential there really is). Also Ciena makes exclusively optical hardware products to focus on, where it has other big competitors who actually lag behind Ciena when it comes to market share and innovation. (https://www.sdxcentral.com/articles/news/cisco-ciena-huawei-and-nokia-lead-optical-vendors-ihs-says/2018/07/)

Edit :
"Stock symbols wrong"
Okay, suck my dick. Ur so cool that you memorized every single company and it's symbols on the NYSE. Go use that knowledge on your friends you have in real life. Or in the work force. Or even at your next job interview.
  1. WHEN YOU TRADE STONKS AM I FORCED TO TYPE THE SYMBOL TO TRADE? AM I?
  2. Yes, Robinhood traders, congratulations! You've learned the symbol(s) via visual repetition. Full company names wouldn't even fit on your portfolio screen. And then staring at data that can only fit on a 6 in screen while checking every 10 minutes to check on your "big gains". It's truly amazing how much better the information is spread out on PC, or even Webull (my 2nd acc)
Ah man, a part of me can't fucking wait for this sell off. Only because I KNOW it'll cause a temporary dip overall in my big 10 where I can get my next big buy in.
I bring you cold, hard facts and you mock me. (this is definitely how Jesus felt when he did his Thang (- not Christian))

Long term options going in SOON but as of now, no current holdings or ulterior motive. Facts only.

I've done my research. But in my very strong opinion, the long term points to Verizon but it seems to me that everyone is hopping onto ATT and Tmobile while neglecting "Americans Fastest and Most Reliable network". (sorry, ex employee hah)
  1. "Verizon doesn't have 5G"
  2. First off, YOU don't have 5G. Low band vs UWB. 5G low band is marginally faster than 4G LTE. ATT and Tmobile rushed to have "nations first 5G network" for marketing but you barely get past 150 Mb/s on low band. UWB has a much smaller radius and it's bad at penetrating surfaces, so it takes much longer and the technology is presumably taking longer. 5G is being used as a marketing ploy while QUALITY is in the backseat. And Verizon understands this, so they are taking their time.
  3. VZW just got rights to use Ericcsons first 5G base for commercial use FIRST https://www.ericsson.com/en/blog/2020/5/for-ericsson-and-verizon-a-strong-partnership-makes-one-plus-one-equal-three
  4. Vzw expanded into the Asian market (India). Partnered with Airtel for some video communications company. - - "foot in the door"
What do we know? 5G UWB technology is for smaller radius and not great at penetrating surfaces (based on current technology). Where would this technology be maximized? India. 5G iPhones coming in fall. And Indians LOVE their iPhones. All I'm saying is Real G's Move in Silence like lasagna. Tmobile and ATT can make all the noise they want. When Verizon steps up 5G UWB, AND *HOME INTERNET, it's a wrap.
***commission pay for retail salesman employees has been cut SEVERELY. Sure, that sucks, but that's a looooot of money that will now be going into vzw pockets. Bad for employees, amazing for stock holders and future investment.
